A fun twist on a classic cocktail, this gin and tonic is best with Old Tom gin and fresh-squeezed citrus.

Ingredients

  • ounces Old Tom gin
  • Juice of one medium blood orange about 1½ ounces
  • Juice of half a lime
  • ounce simple syrup
  • Tonic water
  • Dash of angostura bitters
  • Sprig of basil for garnish

Instructions

  • Measure gin and pour into a tumbler.
  • Squeeze orange and lime juice into glass,
  • Add simple syrup.*
  • Add a couple of large ice cubes and give it a good stir.
  • Fill glass with tonic water, followed by a couple drops of bitters.
  • Stir once more and garnish with basil.

Notes

If you like a tart G&T, you can leave out the syrup, but I think it balances the drink. To make it, just combine equal parts white sugar and water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil and simmer, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Let cool and use in everything from margs to iced coffee! It should keep for at least two weeks.
